Services - Deep Tissue Mobilisation

The intention of deep tissue mobilisation is to:

  • restore balance in the musculoskeletal system

  • restore balance in the nervous system

  • reduce pain

  • correct problems due to poor postural alignment

Deep tissue mobilisation helps to:

  • restore range of motion to stiff joints

  • relieve muscular tightness, spasms or restrictions

  • improve muscle tone and balance

  • reduce the physical stress placed on bones and joints

  • reduce muscle fatigue and soreness by promoting rapid removal of toxins and waste products from the tissues

  • increase flexibility in the muscles

  • bring more oxygen and nutrients into the muscle by increasing blood circulation

Deep tissue mobilisation involves the application of manual techniques such as pressure, compression, bending, longitudinal gliding, cross fibre work, kneading, stretching and rolling the tissues – the purpose of which is to stretch and release the soft tissue of the body.

The soft tissue includes muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and fascia (connective tissue). Working the soft tissue releases structural (bone/joint) changes in the physical body that may be the result of injury, pain and/or muscle imbalance.

Strains to the body during certain movements (including prolonged sitting) can overload the soft tissue of the body which can lead to pain and injury. In the same way that extended sitting can strain the back, neck and shoulders, physical activities without good pelvic alignment can strain the spine, hips, knees or feet. In response to these physical stresses, the tissues can become inflamed and the range of movement in the joints reduced. Injuries and trauma to the soft tissue can also cause adhesions, scar tissue and thickening of the fascia (connective tissue) which can further impede joint movement and increase pain.

At Hands on Physio, conventional physiotherapy techniques are incorporated into each session. These include joint mobilisation, specific exercise prescription for stretching, strengthening and postural re-education. These support the immediate and long term benefits of deep tissue mobilisation which includes maintenance of optimal body alignment.
